Book Review: #IAm16ICanRape

A book powerful enough , bold enough not just pointing the loop hole of the law we purposefully turned a blind eye on but also demanding the result.
There were so many pieces of conversation which resonates in my mind.

“ Rape is not a masculine act at all. Rape is act of anima, feminine, of men who are not comfortable with this aspect of their personality.  “

“ …what message he got from his weak punishment.
I am an adult and I commit rape, it is a heinous crime. It will get a capital punishment. But if I am few months short of being a legal adult and I commit the same crime, it will be considered only a boyhood mistake.”

“…If a person is adult enough to commit a rape, the person is adult enough to take the punishment, period. “

When I think .. no 'postulate' on these characters I realize every character is so true and round, if I look around I can actually find a person similar to them.

The detachment we feel for the characters Rudransh Kashyap and Ananya Kashyap changes to awe.

Quoting Rudransh:

As a society we have succeeded in instilling a fear of being raped into our daughters. But we failed to instill fear of raping a woman in our sons. “

Quoting Ananya:

“ …I am scared of this boy. I am truly scared of what I have given birth to, in a literal, only a literal sense.”

The sudden respect we feel for Gayathri when she sticks to her words.

“...’I should have let Ananya abort you.’”

Feeling sorry for Mrigank and his circumstances.

The respect and awe for Shubangi for her strength and clarity.

“ As a person who has been raped, I can vouch that when I got raped and even for weeks after that, I thanked God that no matter how much physical trauma this man had inflicted on my body, he could NOT break my emotional and social identity.NO matter what society tries to manipulate me into thinking, I won’t believe that this guy, along with my physical sanctity , snatched away my virtue or my womanhood. No he barely managed to fuck me. Nothing more, nothing less! I say barely because rapists are not even good in bed!”

Tez standing by Subh. Pihu evoking sadness for having been so innocent and loyal.

Above all the spine chilling feel every time the smile touches Aarush’s pink lips.
Yes Aarush is one character I cannot relate to anyone. Or to be frank such calculative mind with such complexities is so scary to imagine. And to realise such mind exist is really beyond scary.

“ After the Delhi rape case, I thought, “Fuck man, I can actually do CSCWCW and get away with it because I am a juvenile. If this guy can almost kill a woman and get away. I can always do CSWCW and get away too.”

A story which portrays one of the most ‘untalked’ topic in a family yet the most celebrated topic in media. A bold and strong story with round and realistic characters leaves your heart wrenched and your brain screaming for justice. The book makes you live the book again and again through every character’s perspective.
As a reader, as a social being a must read. The insight into human mind given by the author will surprise you. A very compelling writer and psychologist.
